About this book

It opens with a boy who has more money than he knows what to do with and a widow determined to make him respectable. Huck Finn would rather not be. He fakes his own murder with a pig's blood and a hank of his own hair, slips away from a father who has locked him in a cabin, and lights out for Jackson's Island — "large and dark and solid, like a steamboat with no lights." There he stumbles on Jim, an enslaved man running from being sold south, who leaps up terrified he's seeing a ghost. What follows is a friendship neither of them planned, carried south on a raft.
