He is charming, confident, and unnervingly kind, and he wins the boys' trust with small marvels before he tells them his name is Satan, nephew of the fallen one, an angel who has watched all of human history and feels nothing for it. He conjures tiny living people, then destroys them without a flicker of remorse, resuming his sentence mid-thought. "We cannot do wrong," he explains, "and we have no desire to do it either, because we do not know what it is." Man, he says, is made of dirt and burdened with the "Moral Sense"; angels are the Imperishables.

Twain's luminous prose builds a pastoral hush, then lets horror land through sheer flatness of tone. Satan cradles a wounded dog and heals it under the moonlight; moments later, he crushes a little world of his own making and sets the boys dancing over the grave. His departure, thinning into a shimmering, rainbow-colored bubble that bounces once and bursts, leaves them in wonder and doubt, never quite able to return to being boys.

What begins as village comedy opens, chapter by chapter, into cosmic theology, an argument about God, free will, and what it means to be small under an indifferent sky. The boys are bound to secrecy and drawn ever deeper into their strange friendship, and the reader is drawn with them, toward questions Twain asks without ever quite letting go of his wit.
