About this book

In the Austrian village of Eseldorf, in the year 1590, the world still lives in an Age of Belief, a quiet place of hills and river and cliffs, with an ancient vine-covered castle looking down from above. This is where Mark Twain sets three boys, Theodor, Nikolaus, and Seppi, who spend their days exploring the woods and listening to the old castle servant's tales of ghosts and war. Below them, the beloved Father Peter has been disgraced by a rival's accusation, and he and his niece Marget slip toward ruin. It is an ordinary world, tenderly drawn, until a young stranger walks out of the trees.
