What follows is flight. Peter teaches Wendy, John, and Michael to leave the ground and carries them off toward Neverland, an ever-shifting island unique to each child's mind, which they recognize on arrival as though returning home rather than finding it for the first time. Below wait lost boys, fairies, mermaids who favor only Peter, and pirates. A little house is built around Wendy, and the boys beg her to be their mother. A thimble stands in for a kiss and, later, tenderly, means far more than that.

Barrie tells it with a storyteller's warmth, leaning in to confide, admitting the limits of what he can say, sometimes pausing to marvel at his own creation. "Every time a child says 'I don't believe in fairies,' a fairy dies," Peter warns, and the book holds that mix of play and real stakes: bravery, showmanship, and a boy who forgets the people he loves.

Beneath the adventure runs something quieter: the ache of a child who cannot, will not grow, and a mother who keeps the nursery window forever open.
